The question of why we suffer may be beyond our understanding, but one thing is clear: we are finite before the infinity of the world, and this finitude is fundamental to our suffering. We are never safe from suffering.
The sufferings we endure in life are a price we pay for being.
Nietzsche says: “The human being, the most courageous of creatures, does not flee from suffering but seeks it and even goes looking for it. To suffer without meaning—not suffering itself—is the curse of human life.”
If we flee from suffering, we will never discover the power within ourselves. This is the place of suffering in reaching our individuation.
By consciously accepting our suffering, we move beyond its boundaries and reach a form of joy—a joy produced by the process of growth, not its goal.
The ideal of our life is neither the pursuit of pleasure nor escape from suffering, but something beyond both: the search for meaning. Until we carry the cross of our own suffering with dignity, we will not attain growth.
