“What are the necessary and unnecessary sufferings of our lives, and how can we overcome them?”

In this world, where chaos is continually expanding, there are always only a few of us and a great many of everything else. It is this limitation of ours in the face of the world’s expanding entropy that is the source of our suffering; yet the truth is that without this limitation our existence would not be possible.
Our liberation passes through accepting the sufferings of our lives. This acceptance makes us larger than those sufferings and places us on the path of individuation.

The first sufferings we encounter in life are existential sufferings: sufferings rooted in the limitations of our existence, limitations that are also conditions of our being. Our greatest step toward overcoming these sufferings is to accept them in the light of finding a meaning in life greater than the suffering itself.

Another group consists of the unnecessary sufferings we ourselves construct in life, the sufferings we endure because of our own mistakes. Through the expansion of awareness, we can remove them.

The necessary sufferings of life—such as the suffering of separation from the collective—are sufferings we must be willing to meet if we are to free ourselves from the personality culture and society have given us: the personality that has made us one like everyone else and taken our individuality from us.
