There are periods in life when nothing remains for us in social life except silence, and I am passing through such days and nights.
Anything other than silence would create a distance from honesty with myself, until these days of “we are nothing, we are only looking” also pass.
The closing passage through middle age is a difficult time in life. It is no longer a period of testing, but a time of judgement upon the decisions we have made about our choices, our health, our work, our way of life, our friendships, our beliefs and even the future whose foundations have become far harder to change than they were in youth, because the cement of our past decisions has already set around them. It is a period in which we want to remain with the next generation, yet our pains, limitations, emotions and difficulties resemble those of the generations before us, while at the same time we suffer with the suffering of our children as we suffer with that of our fathers and mothers.
The world fills with new colours and new voices, and this silence, watching these strange days, and the warmth of the presence of those I love make the difficulty of passing through this time easier. If love remains, then fatigue, tearful eyes, sleeplessness, physical pain, loneliness and the difficulties of life become simply experiences of living beneath the weight of existence, until the dark night of the soul too passes and these drops of suffering falling upon the soul transform our being along the path of individuation.
