In Platonic thought, the human being belongs to the world of Forms and ideals, and the Logos is a spark of that light and truth within the human being. On entering the cave of the senses—the material world—the human being forgets the world of Forms, yet can free the self through the spark of light within, by remembering the world of Forms once again and ascending towards it. This is the purpose and meaning of human life.
The aim of Platonic philosophy is to show each of us that there is a purpose and a truth in life greater and higher than ourselves, one capable of giving meaning to our lives and helping us contribute to the realisation of a better world.
