Social changes are far greater than political transformations and revolutions. Politics, even in its hardest form, is nothing more than a skin upon the body of society.
As society grows, this skin either grows with it and becomes the garment suited to the society’s developed stature, or it inevitably cracks and collapses. The more flexible this skin, the longer it survives and the more it can grow.
Without growth, even if we break this skin a hundred times, nothing will return except the same old prison around the body of society in a new design. The question, then, is never simply about changing the skin; it is about growth—about our becoming larger than the skin.
Growth, however, always comes with pain. It comes with uncertainty and danger, and it always encounters resistance. Yet it is the love of growing taller and becoming larger than the prison of the past that will ultimately prevail.
So long as we continue to grow, even if, like a silkworm, we die inside the prison of our cocoon, we will still break that cocoon and fly.
We will grow if we live tomorrow today, if we become today the change we want to see in our society after victory.
Growth begins with resistance to remaining small and begins to rise by living beyond the pressure of the shell, like a seed that surrenders neither to its own husk nor to the darkness and pressure of the soil.
Growth is filled with love. It is filled with creativity and possibility. It is filled with the power of life. What we must live is love, creativity, freedom, loyalty to truth and the forces of life. Growth will come, and the shell will either become larger or it will break. But what does it matter what the shell does once we have risen from the heart of this soil?
