Overcoming our separation from the Self and the world is the central essence of mysticism and mystical experience.
The principal mode of superficial and formal readings of religious thought has always rested on separation: separating ourselves from those who do not think as we do. By a different path, the mystical perspective calls us to transformation from within through connection with our own Self, other human beings and living creatures, and the world of existence.

On this path—the path of realizing our individuation—we do not separate ourselves from our shadows or from our being upon the earth. By attending to our wholeness and accepting it, we make a genuine transformation of the Self possible. Through a deep connection with other human beings, other creatures, and existence itself, we bring the fragmentation of our being to an end and give to the outer world what has been realized within us.
