Whenever we reach the threshold of a new stage of growth in our personality, we inevitably have to lose something from the past: a part of ourselves, a familiar part of life, or a part of our definition of the world upon which we have always relied.

Growth of personality is impossible without losing something from the personality’s past—something on which we have depended for psychological security. In losing it, we must pass through the gates of change toward a larger Self without security and with a deep sense of vulnerability.
