Over the course of life we gradually discover that the process of death and rebirth occurs not once but again and again. Many times we find ourselves in the painful, defenceless, and lonely condition of the orphan, and in the end we undergo, with pain and suffering, the death of the self we have been and of our past in order to give birth to tomorrow and to a Self that must be more complete than yesterday. Even if we resist this death, life will guide us toward it over the years and will not spare us its suffering.
The person who seeks truth courageously goes out to meet their suffering along this path, stands face to face with the Self, and cries out: “Destroy everything that I am and give me something better.” For such a person knows that, in order to give birth to what we can be but are not yet, we must be able to step with open arms onto the path of the death of everything we presently are.
Only the person who has accepted the suffering of death and entry into the underworld can experience the resurrection of their individuation.
Goethe once wrote: “On this dark planet Earth, you will remain only a guest unless you ceaselessly practise dying and being reborn.”
