We experience and expand ourselves through others. Through what we learn, we discover new boundaries of the person we can become and realise that our true self—that invisible presence sitting motionless and timeless at the centre of all our human experiences from childhood and looking outward—is neither the one who wins nor the one who fails, nor the one carried by the waves of life’s events into unknown lands. Our true self is the continuity that connects all our experiences across time and, over the years, gives itself an increasingly clear image.

It takes years to focus our inner light and kindle our individuality, the fire that gives meaning to life. It takes years to discover that everything great in life, including ourselves, is not great from the beginning but becomes great through the transformation of life’s small things. The most beautiful and admirable human beings are those who know how to elevate the small things of life into great forms of beauty.

They are those who allow themselves to accept the suffering of loving and the risk of being loved, because they know that we always discover part of our own being in the feelings of others. Those who write fearlessly on the page of life and erase without regret what they have written, because they know that even if everything they write is never read, they have still told the whole story of their life.
