Across the world, one common method used by systems of power is to render critical and oppositional discourse banal. This is an operation sometimes called controlled opposition: a situation in which banality conceals the logic of the targeted oppositional discourse, contaminates the space, and leads people to see the sphere of critics of power as something resembling an unserious and dangerous circus.

What you should always remember is that the same discourse can place different masks upon its face while the same actor remains behind those masks.

Every social or political discourse can be destroyed through two routes:
1) attacking it while wearing different masks;
2) infiltrating it and reducing it to banality while wearing different masks.

In this situation, a discourse can remain alive only through the power of its own clear expression.

If you believe something is correct on the basis of your own reasoning, defend it clearly and do not be afraid that you will be grouped together with others who, on the surface, defend the same thing. Likewise, express your criticism of what you believe is wrong and do not be afraid of being grouped with others who appear to criticise it.

Be yourself and express your own thoughts clearly. Do not board trains without direction or meaning even if the name of your own movement or school of thought is written on them. Nor should you abandon what you believe to be right merely because others who are wrong appear to share your discourse, because you fear being grouped with them, or because you fear that your action may give them power.

Do not allow the collective psychological atmosphere to destroy your individuation. Defend what you regard as ethical, right and true—even against everyone.
