According to Frankfurt, *tār-kubi* is fundamentally different from both talking nonsense and lying.

In *tār-kubi* there is no respect for truth. Yet unlike lying, where the liar’s aim is to present false information, in *tār-kubi* the truth or falsity of the information is fundamentally irrelevant.

The purpose of *tār-kubi* is, at root, to make truth and its importance meaningless. Its aim is to draw the audience into a network of empty and meaningless information bearing no relation to the important truths of the world in which they live.

Once we become caught in *tār-kubi*, meaningful conversation becomes impossible. The further we travel along this path, the more our respect diminishes for truth and for the world in which we live. Our frustration with the possibility that life has meaning increases, and our suspicion of the honesty of every discourse we encounter grows. Gradually we become more indifferent and disenchanted, losing ourselves in endless networks of *tār-kubi*.

Aldous Huxley, the famous English writer and thinker, is attributed here with writing that the greatest fear for the world’s future is not that despotic governments will hide truth from people. The real fear is that truth will have no respect or meaning for the people of the future. Truth will stand before their eyes, and they will pass it by indifferently.

One could say that the most important aim of *tār-kubi* is to create precisely such people and such a society: people who pass indifferently before the truths of their society. A society in which people are indifferent not only to the importance and honesty of the linguistic propositions offered to them, but willingly give their minds to *tār-kubi* and to the meaningless cultural products it generates, spreading them through their society.

Despotic regimes have a particular interest in *tār-kubi* and in its expansion within society. The first goal of totalitarian regimes is, above all, to spread their ideology and create a society that recognises only one mind, one language, and one way of thinking and living. But if that goal is not fully achieved, the second aim is to keep society occupied with *tār-kubi* and lead it toward a life emptied of meaning.
