From Anti-Imperialism to Moral Blindness:
Iran, Left-Wing Campism, and the Crisis of Political Language

In this seminar I will try to show how, at the intersection of one strand of the anti-imperialist left, postmodernism, and progressive liberal currents—particularly wokeism—a form of political language has emerged that, although formed in opposition to domination and inequality, has become morally blind to the reality of the suffering of the Iranian people.

This discussion is not simply a critique of a political position. It is an inquiry into the historical, philosophical and psychological roots of this crisis: from anti-imperialism and campism to questions of truth, authority, and our relationship with the archetype of the ideal father and the tyrannical shadow of that archetype.

This seminar will serve as an introduction to a broader conversation around the question of why the language of left and right is no longer sufficient for understanding Iran, and why the Iranian experience requires a deeper and more precise language.

This series, entitled “Horizons of Iran,” has been designed at the invitation of the Lion and Sun Union of Students in Europe. Its topics are:
