There are many things in our lives that happen beyond our control. The truth is that large parts of our fate are shaped by forces outside our will. Yet amid all the determinism of life, perhaps choosing the people with whom we share our love, our life and our friendship is the one place where we come closest to the possibility of “taking our destiny into our own hands.”

These were lines spoken by Randall Pearson, a character in one of my favourite television series, This Is Us. To me, they express a profound truth about the importance of our choices in our relationships and in the people we allow close to our lives.
