“The Structure of Masculine Energy and the Negative Features of the Masculine Archetype”
An archetype is another name for a structure of human experience that is, to a greater or lesser degree, shared among human beings wherever and within whatever culture they live.
Men experience life in particular ways. Understanding this not only helps women gain a deeper understanding of male psychology, but also enables them to establish a deeper relationship with the masculine dimension of their own being. Understanding masculine archetypes therefore helps not only men, but women as well, to develop their individuation in a more balanced way.
A man who adopts violence as his way of life, whose way is governed by selfishness and narcissism, and who has accepted falsehood and weakness within himself, stands at the opposite pole from a man who has brought his masculine energies toward transcendence and maturity. A father who becomes tyrannical, or a manager, commander, or soldier who regards violence and egocentrism as part of being a man, displays only the shadows of an undeveloped childhood trying to conceal inner fears, weaknesses, and anxieties behind a dark persona.
A man who has developed the higher masculine archetypes within himself embodies an ideal father in whom one can sense order, clarity of purpose, and the capacity to protect. He is the centre of balance in his world, and those who live within that world experience a deep sense of balance, confidence, strength, and clarity of purpose. He is a man who is not only sovereign in his own world, but carries within himself a humble and calm warrior, ready at any moment to confront the visible and invisible dangers of life without fear. At the same time, he is an alchemist who is continually learning, expanding his awareness, creating, and building; and ultimately he is a lover who knows the art of loving and of union with the feminine spirit.
