The “Philosophy and Psychoanalysis Discourse” Association consists of a group of students from the University of Tehran, Shahid Beheshti University, the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences in Tehran, and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad who are interested in reading philosophical and social-scientific texts. They have recently placed a critical study of psychoanalysis on their reading agenda. A few days ago I therefore received a set of questions from these friends in this field. The first concerned the emergence of Freud’s psychoanalysis at the beginning of the twentieth century and the influence upon it of nineteenth-century positivism and the scientistic mythology of that period. I believe this is a fundamental and important question for understanding modern psychology, its roots, and its relation to the history of science and philosophy. I therefore decided to share my response with other friends who may also be interested in the subject.
