The genealogy of philosophical concepts does not only allow us to understand more clearly the history of philosophical terms that themselves have a history. By expanding the perspectives and concepts we associate with those terms, it also enables us to build a wider network of relations around them in our minds. In this way it makes possible understanding and dialogue with a larger range of people who do not necessarily share our beliefs, while freeing us from the ignorance and prejudice produced by the narrowness of our own intellectual horizon.
