According to Carl Jung’s model of the structure of human personality, at its deepest level lies the collective unconscious, which is composed of archetypes. Archetypes are forces that shape the structure of human experience, and among them the anima and animus archetypes represent our experiences of femininity and masculinity.

Men experience life in particular ways. Understanding this not only helps women gain a deeper understanding of male psychology, but also enables them to establish a deeper relationship with the masculine dimension of their own being. Understanding masculine archetypes therefore helps not only men, but women as well, to develop their individuation in a more balanced way.

The contemporary world is full of men who, regardless of their power and social position, are merely grown boys who have never attained masculine psychological maturity.
Understanding the operation of the animus in the psyche, its positive and negative sides, and questioning ourselves in relation to this force makes it possible for us to become aware of some of the most unknown dimensions of the psyche and to move toward greater balance within it.

In this video, Dr Areta discusses the characteristics of a negative and unbalanced animus.
