There have certainly been mistakes for which our guides were responsible: those who taught us how to debate and negotiate, but not how to live.
There have also been mistakes on the part of students, who came to their teachers not in order to cultivate their souls but to cultivate their powers of reasoning and intelligence.
And so philosophy, which is the study of wisdom, has become the study of words.
