The twenty-fifth of August marks the anniversary of the death of Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the most brilliant and controversial philosophers to have emerged in the long and turbulent history of philosophy.

Nietzsche was appointed to a professorship at the University of Basel at the age of twenty-four. Only ten years later he resigned from teaching at the university in order to devote himself to writing his books, and ten years after that he descended into an insanity that remained with him until the end of his life. He eventually died at the age of fifty-six, in poverty and solitude. Between the ages of twenty-four and forty-four, in only twenty years, he transformed the history of philosophy.

To mark the anniversary of his death, I have selected ten sayings from among the hundreds of profound statements he left behind, and offer them to you in remembrance of this great philosopher.
