In Nietzsche’s view, freedom in the existential domain of the human being becomes possible only through liberation from shame, and only by being released from shame can one stand freely and firmly upon the ground of one’s own existence.

This freedom is never achieved by defeating feelings of shame and guilt; it arises from accepting them in the heart.
To become free from guilt in our lives, we have only two paths:

1) Never say no to anyone, and always live within the boundaries that society, others, and tradition draw for us. The price of such a life is extremely high. We will lose the Self and the possibility of moving beyond our own limitations. We will move no boundary and remain defeated by the world and by others for our entire lives. We will be forced, like “zero” in the addition, subtraction, and multiplication performed by others and the world, to produce a result that is always the same.

2) Eliminate guilt entirely. This would turn us into a ruthless psychopath who recognizes no boundary between good and evil.

The third path, which Part Four of the Alchemy with Shadow Emotions seminar examines, passes through accepting a degree of guilt in life. The capacity to carry guilt and to live with this feeling is one of the most important characteristics of a mature personality.
