Our approach to interpreting stories and myths may be one of Literalism: we treat the outward level of the characters and events as external and Objective and accept that surface as the object of interpretation.

Or we can choose a Psychoanalytical approach to myths and stories. In this perspective none of the elements of the story or myth exists outside our Psyche; all of them are inner forces.
