In Kurdish culture, when a young man and woman fall in love, they choose the best and largest apple and, in Kurdish custom, stud it with cloves and give it to one another.
The clove-studded apple is a symbol of love in Kurdish culture.

Once the cloves are pressed into the apple, the apple’s moisture escapes through them and the fruit turns into a wooden-like sphere. This process takes about a month, but after it dries the apple can remain in the same form for more than a hundred years. Interestingly, even years later, if a little water is sprinkled onto it, the fragrance of cloves fills the air, evoking the passion of love’s first days.
