Part Three of the third seminar in the Alchemy with Shadow Emotions course
Beyond the Fear of Death
Death in Mahayana Buddhism and Heidegger’s Philosophy
The concepts examined in this section include:
— the Bhavachakra, or wheel of existence, in Mahayana Buddhism and the six realms of existence;
— how moksha, or final liberation, is attained through the realisation of emptiness, understood here as liberation from all six realms;
— an introduction to Shantideva and his major work, the Bodhicaryavatara, in later Buddhism;
— the concepts of bodhisattva, bodhicitta and the principle of karuna as a path towards awakening and collective awakening in later Buddhist traditions;
— ideas attributed here to Toltec seekers of Central America concerning mortality, considered comparatively;
— Heidegger’s foundational ideas concerning death in the second part of the first division of Being and Time, including the characteristics of the relation between death and Dasein;
— Heidegger’s distinction between the relation to death of the authentic Self and the self fallen into “the they” (das Man);
— the concept of freedom towards death from a Heideggerian perspective.
