According to Plato, the philosopher is not simply a scholar of theological and philosophical disciplines. The philosopher is one who leaves Plato's cave, which symbolises the sensible world, and apprehends the world of Forms and ideals; and when returning to liberate others, possesses a deeper understanding of freedom, justice, humanity and the ideal form of every idea.

The aim of the philosopher is not only to explain the world and the human being, but to transform the inner world of each person: to guide that person toward light and out of the cave, and ultimately to elevate the world toward its final form and fulfilment.
