Many philosophers and sociologists—among them Foucault, Laclau, Arendt, Gramsci and Fanon—have held that resistance to despotism begins in the domains of language and culture. The place where this teacher from Qaemshahr is standing is precisely our first line of resistance. Remember that a narrative that is never told, in effect, has never existed. If Sattar Beheshti remains a living contemporary narrative for us, it is only because a mother transformed the image of herself holding a framed photograph of her son into a living narrative. That framed photograph is the territory conquered by this mother’s narrative, just as this film is the victory of a narrative of the injustice inflicted upon this teacher and her students.
