Marx, Humanism and Modernity — Part 2: Reflections on Marshall Berman
Seminar summary
The second part of the Marx, humanism, and modernity discussion begins from the question left open in Part I: if a humanist strand can be identified in Marx, how does it relate to the theoretical and political traditions later organised under the name of Marxism? This PDF also lacks the full seminar transcript, so the present summary relies on the speaker's public description of the video. That description identifies the session's focus as Marshall Berman's anthropological reading of Marx and a comparison with criticisms arising from existentialism, the Frankfurt School, neo-Marxism, and radical-democratic theory.
Within this frame, Berman reads Marx as a thinker who understands modernity through human experience. Modern people inhabit a world in which established forms are repeatedly dissolved and possibilities of self-creation expand, yet the same world embeds individuals in economic and social relations that can limit their creative powers. This reading resists reducing Marx to a theory of economic necessity or class conflict alone. Emancipation becomes connected with the development of human capacities and with forms of life in which individuals can become agents rather than merely bearers of a structural class position.
Existential criticism sharpens this problem. Existential thought places choice, responsibility, and the singularity of the person near the centre of human existence and therefore resists theories that treat the individual as the complete product of structure or historical necessity. The Frankfurt School, including Herbert Marcuse, develops a different critique from within the Marxian orbit: domination can operate through culture, manufactured needs, consciousness, and everyday life, so emancipation cannot be equated simply with a change in economic ownership. These traditions attempt to preserve something that rigid political Marxisms can lose—the fact that the subjects of liberation are actual persons with desires, conflicts, creativity, and private lives.
The reference to neo-Marxism and radical democracy, including Ernesto Laclau, opens a further challenge. Society need not be reducible to a single final contradiction or one privileged collective identity. Political identities are constructed, demands are plural, and democratic life remains a field of articulation and conflict. On this view, emancipatory politics requires institutions capable of sustaining plurality rather than a project that assumes all antagonisms can be resolved in one final historical subject. This does not require denying economic structure; it means refusing to treat economic structure as an exhaustive explanation of political subjectivity and social conflict.
The seminar therefore draws an important analytic distinction between Marx and historical Marxisms and asks whether the humanist resources of Marx's critique can be separated from authoritarian projects later associated with his name. The public description does not present a closed final answer. The productive point is the problem itself: a politics of freedom must remain attentive to material and structural domination while also protecting individuality, choice, and plurality. Because the archive contains no complete transcript for this seminar, the summary deliberately avoids attributing detailed positions beyond those explicitly identified in the creator's description.
